It’s hard to imagine anyone other than the BBC attempting a sitcom centered around a group of elderly men, many with physical limitations, tasked with protecting their corner of England from Nazis just across the Channel – and armed with only one rifle and some makeshift broom handles. David Croft and Jimmy Perry have struck comedic gold once again with this delightful series, placing Arthur Lowe as "Capt. Mainwaring," the town’s self-important bank manager in command of a platoon that includes his timid but clever clerk, "Sgt. Wilson" (John Le Mesurier); "Cpl. Jones," who served in the previous war (Clive Dunn); perpetually downtrodden "Pte. Pike"—the youngest member of the group and as inept as one could be, frequently the target of jokes (Ian Lavender), and, for me at least, the standout performer: the elderly, taciturn Scottish undertaker, veteran John Laurie, playing “Pte. Frazer.” The episodes unfold a variety of gently humorous and somewhat absurd situations as the Home Guard confronts everything from a royal visit to capturing enemy paratroopers—all providing "Mainwaring" ample chances to showcase his incompetence in leadership and decision-making while the rest of the ensemble carries the show. The writing is both touching and clever, poking fun not only at their adversaries but also at the remnants of an overly proud class structure that was clearly fading away, as well as satirizing the eager middle classes vying for a place within it. The acting is exceptional, improving with each episode as the performers settle into their roles and interact seamlessly. With talent like this on our side, it’s easy to understand why we were victorious in the war!
