Synopsis

The ancient highway network of Japan, known as the Kaido, has largely faded from memory. In a new series, we trace the Old Hokuriku Kaido between Fukui and Niigata Prefectures, uncovering distinctive local cultures shaped by those who once traversed its paths. We visit post stations, havens of food and rest for weary travelers, and the castle town of Kanazawa, where traditional wooden machiya houses line the streets. Along the way, we encounter a glass artist and resourceful high school students
