It employs familiar anime conventions, certainly, but doesn't lack substance either. What I consider most significant about the show’s depiction of Cyberpunk is that it isn’t simply about people behaving badly; rather, capitalism consistently creates difficult circumstances for those less fortunate. The central character isn’t white—or even the fairest person in the series—and isn’t destined for greatness either. Crucially, the portrayal of addiction as a consequence of trauma resonated deeply with me. I recall someone knowledgeable about technology missing these details (perhaps due to differing cultural perspectives), and I also feel that people can't really be faulted if they only grasp surface-level aspects from media, but those deeper elements are what made this show so remarkable.
