The Russo Brothers’ costly misfire achieves a new level of blandness. Citadel is an over-the-top and pricey production, costing 1600 crores—an amount that could have been used to alleviate poverty in several nations. This visually polished espionage thriller doesn't distinguish itself from the numerous similar stories already available. From inconsistent visual effects to contrived drama, uninteresting characters, and unremarkable plot developments, it has all the elements to disappoint viewers who appreciate well-crafted spy thrillers. The screenplay suffers due to jarring shifts in time that undermine any potential for audience involvement. Aside from Leslie Manville’s sharp portrayal, Citadel doesn't offer much in the way of compelling performances. The action sequences, apart from the initial one, are underwhelming and generally forgettable. If you tend to watch everything trending, you might find Citadel repetitive and dull; however, occasional viewers may want to give it a try. It’s also worth noting that Amazon is developing a global spy franchise centered around Citadel, with an Indian version starring Varun Dhawan and Samantha, directed by Raj and DK.
