It’s been a long time since I encountered a dramatic television series as compelling as this one. It presents a real challenge to keep things engaging when dealing with events that viewers may already be familiar with, and this show succeeds in doing so effectively. While the narrative structure is somewhat foreseeable—employing viewpoints from various individuals involved, including scientists and government officials, plant workers, affected citizens, and even the spouse of an employee who accompanies him to a Moscow hospital—each perspective feels well-developed. Some criticisms I’ve seen didn't resonate with me. One commenter on a different site gave it a low score simply because he felt it shouldn’t have been ranked above Game of Thrones. That seemed like a strange reason to me. Another viewer suggested the series was too lenient in its depiction of the Communist regime, but I disagree; having lived through Gorbachev and Glasnost, this portrayal appeared accurate. I'm already planning on rewatching the series once I complete the book it draws inspiration from. It’s definitely worth your time.
