The initial season was decent, notably distinctive considering it originated in Europe. It addressed themes of racism and isolated groups, issues frequently encountered across Europe. There was a hint of racial bias woven into the narrative, likely intended to satisfy those at the top of State Television, but that felt tolerable enough. The second season escalated things considerably, playing out within a familiar European environment: Black people, Eastern Europeans—they’re all portrayed as scheming to deprive "us" "genuine" White individuals of everything. They're depicted as uncivilized with their strange customs, and it falls to one of “our” own to rescue these less developed people from themselves. The first season centered on a police officer examining a death. Consequently, the police presence was quite prominent, acting like shining knights. This was balanced out by the shortcomings of the local law enforcement, whose methods weren’t always flawless. In the second season, it felt overtly like state-sponsored messaging: an endorsement of the police and Big Brother, even though the central character isn't part of the force; in fact, he can’t rejoin the police ranks. Like all propaganda, this message falls apart under scrutiny—the criminal networks existed because of police actions; no magical being could establish such a complex power dynamic overnight. Eastern European women are depicted as sex workers and drug users, while “genuine” White women hold respectable positions. And Black men are portrayed as drug distributors and prone to violence. It seems that in this show, dark skin is equated with aggression and a lack of refinement compared to lighter skin tones. Essentially, Black skin functions as the indicator for drug trafficking within the series.
