Synopsis

Within the walls of the Abbey, a dreadful discovery: the lifeless body of an old man concealed within a sack. Brother Cadfael suspected foul play, believing he had been murdered. Suspicion quickly fell upon a company of pilgrims recently arrived at the monastery, among whom were two men with reputations as thieves. To provoke the killer into revealing themselves, Cadfael ordered the pilgrims detained.
