Synopsis

The wealthy landowner disinherited his stepson, intending to bestow his considerable fortune upon Shrewsbury Abbey; soon after, he was discovered poisoned. When Brother Cadfael was summoned to examine the matter, a profound surprise awaited him: the deceased man’s wife proved to be a woman with whom he had shared a youthful affection, someone he hadn't encountered in forty years.
