With Sheriff Coffee absent in Saint Louis, the Morrisey family seized an opportunity to release their pent-up frustrations by demolishing the town saloon in a destructive rampage. When Deputy Bill Harris attempted to make an arrest, they struck him upon the head with a whiskey bottle, resulting in his accidental death.
