I recently watched BLUE EYE SAMURAI, and I’m glad I didn't overlook it thanks to two movie critics I really appreciate: Zwei wie Pech und Schwafel. BLUE EYE SAMURAI is an animated series, but definitely not geared toward kids. The narrative centers on Mizu, a young warrior who embarks on a violent quest for vengeance against her father. The show's name comes from the color of the main character’s eyes—they are blue because her father was a white man, one of only four in Japan during the Edo period. Because of her unusual eye coloring, she was considered a half-breed, treated as less than human, even seen as a monster or demon by those around her, and that's something she felt from an early age. She struggles to form connections until her mother is killed, after which a blacksmith takes her in and trains her in swordsmanship. One thing I noticed right away was that for the first hour and a half—or maybe even longer—I wasn’t sure if Mizu was male or female. I suspected she was female from the start, but her voice, appearance, and general attitude suggested otherwise. It took me quite some time to be absolutely certain of her gender, and in my opinion, that's a sign of how well the series developed the character. I won’t go into all the specifics, but this show has everything: a strong and captivating story, gorgeous visuals—both regarding the scenery and backgrounds, as well as the characters and their environment—and amazing action sequences. The characters are memorable and engaging; I never felt bored with them. In fact, even though her morality is questionable, I found myself completely supporting her. Overall, this is an instance where Netflix managed to deliver high-quality entertainment that isn’t just the usual uninspired content that streaming services tend to produce.
