I’d put off watching this for quite some time because of all the buzz surrounding it, and sometimes that kind of attention is just empty promotion. But with Bleach, the excitement felt warranted; if I were younger, I probably would have loved it even more. The story centers on a young man who finds out his ability to perceive spirits also gives him the power to fight corrupted and malevolent ones. Because he’s still a teenager, he acts like one – making rash decisions, not thinking things through, being somewhat cocky, struggling to own up to errors, and frequently finding himself in situations beyond his capabilities. His missteps can become quite predictable and feel contrived as a plot mechanism. Speaking of unnecessary additions, the series includes a significant amount of filler material. If that’s something you dislike, there are lists available to help you skip those episodes. It really needs an edited version like Dragon Ball Kai, removing all the flashbacks, openings, endings, and fillers. Despite this, the world-building is strong, the backstory engaging, and the characters feel fleshed out. You can generally grasp why they do what they do, even if their reasons often come down to fundamental emotions like anger or jealousy. Honestly, I’d rewatch it immediately if there was a version that had been trimmed of all the extra stuff.
