The series adopts a gothic atmosphere rather than mirroring the restrained emotions found in the well-known Powell & Pressburger film. Gemma Arterton portrays Sister Clodagh, an optimistic head nun who is responsible for setting up a school and medical facility at Mopu Palace, located high in the Himalayas. The attractive Mr. Dean, employed as general help around the palace, creates quite a buzz, especially among the nuns; Sister Ruth begins to display increasingly erratic behavior and also harbors feelings of bitterness towards Sister Clodagh. Something about the environment within the monastery seems to be influencing the nuns' states of mind. Visually, the series is appealing and demonstrates high production values, though it feels stretched out beyond its ideal length.
