The most enjoyable aspect of Black Lightening is its occasional bursts of 1970s Funk music, which genuinely feels like a highlight—a cool thing to experience in any medium. It’s certainly preferable to contemporary music. Still, more than the other superhero programs on The CW, it's significantly hampered by the network’s style. Just as you anticipate progress, the typical teenage drama characteristic of The CW intrudes and deflates any momentum. It would be understandable if this were an isolated incident, but the show seems to have its potential diminished repeatedly by The CW. There was opportunity to explore issues of race in a compelling and dramatic fashion, yet it veered into predictable melodrama because of The CW’s influence. Similarly, the subject of death could have been handled with excitement and intensity, only to be abruptly diverted into another bout of CW-style drama. These instances accumulate, and while I think the show deserves more than a single star rating, The CW repeatedly stifled its potential, making it difficult to invest time in watching. It feels as though The CW is constantly interjecting, saying “Hold on! You’re about to become gripping and realistic—don't forget your target audience is a group of high school students!” I’ve lost interest; I can’t continue watching. However, I think that if another network—excluding Netflix—had acquired the show, it could have been quite good.
