I ended up watching the whole series today, and it was one of those stories that just wouldn’t let go; I needed to see how it all played out. To be straightforward, it proved to be a remarkably well-done true crime television show. It brought to mind True Detective and Mindhunters, feeling like it belonged in the same class as those shows. I don't believe it surpassed Mindhunters, but I do think it was better than True Detective Season 1. That’s my assessment of it. The series had a lot going for it, although I felt it could have used more depth regarding the central character; they didn't really delve into him. I never truly got to know him. Even when he was speaking with the antagonist, it lacked sincerity, and I don’t think that was necessarily the intention. He frequently lied to get what he needed from the other person. A real standout element was Larry Hall’s character, portrayed in a very unusual way by Paul Walter Hauser. He mentioned how happy he was to have worked with Ray Liotta, who unfortunately passed away during filming. Hauser's performance was exceptional; he consistently played this quiet, unassuming man until his darker side inevitably emerged. It was incredibly impressive how well he captured the role. His portrayal reminded me of Mindhunters and the actor who played Ed Kemper. There’s a constant feeling throughout the show that you’re being manipulated by the antagonist, creating a sense that the main character is being used as a pawn. The rest of the series wasn't particularly memorable otherwise. The cinematography was good, especially in the episode preceding the finale. The director really managed to build suspense during that initial scene with the therapist. I’d give it four stars because I couldn’t stop watching it all day. Although, perhaps a rating of 3.5 would be more accurate; it's certainly above average but not quite on par with something like Zodiac (Fincher). The filmmakers involved have clearly demonstrated their abilities. It was a strong show overall, though the ending felt a little rushed in that final episode. I definitely recommend it. What always gets to me about this type of story is how it makes you question why God would create serial killers. There's a line from a Zen monk’s poem that came to mind while I was watching: Thich Naht Hanh wrote it, and it says: "I am the pirate who is raping the child, but I am also the child being raped. Call me and know me by my true self."
