Synopsis

Gretchen was taking night classes, determined to earn her American citizenship. Despite considerable effort and progress, she failed the examination. It appeared her memory functioned best when fueled by frustration; consequently, Benson and Marcy began accompanying her. Recognizing this pattern, Benson employed the “anger strategy” whenever Gretchen faltered during subsequent attempts. She would become agitated, unleashing a torrent of answers that ultimately secured her citizenship.
