The Governor fell ill and was confined to his bed, creating a vacancy that Ed, his junior deputy, eagerly filled. However, Ed’s assumption of power proved excessive; he stretched the authority and duties of the office beyond reasonable bounds. Driven by ambition, he began maneuvering to secure the governorship permanently. Benson, observing this blatant overreach, intervened with the intent of thwarting Ed's designs.
