I went in expecting to despise this show, like most people who even glanced at it did. The art style really reminded me of Family Guy and American Dad, and I assumed it would be a watered-down version of those programs. But after watching the whole series, it’s easily among my top three Scooby-Doo shows. I recall when this came out; everyone online was furious and called it awful. My explanation for why it received so much criticism upon release comes down to two reasons. First, the art style isn't great, and I suppose people made the same assumption I did before even giving it a try. The second reason is that it followed Mystery Incorporated, and viewers seemed upset because it wasn’t as clever or complex as that show—which we were already fortunate to have, frankly, and they rejected it without really considering it. This show and Mystery Inc. are completely different programs, and judging this one based on the standards of Mystery Inc. is pretty foolish. Evaluate it for what it is, not what it isn't. I kept anticipating a decline in quality or fewer laughs as the series progressed, but instead, it actually improved. One thing I appreciate about this show is how the characters are reimagined. Fred is surprisingly good; he plays the straight man and has to try to lead these oddballs who don’t listen to him. He might be my favorite version of the character in a comedic setting, and as much as I love Mystery Inc.’s Fred, I don't think he would fit well here because everyone would be strange. Daphne is undoubtedly the best incarnation of her character; there isn't really any competition. Mystery Inc.'s Daphne’s entire personality revolves around pining for Fred and doesn’t have much else going on. Here, she’s fun and quirky—something I always wanted for this flat character. I enjoyed most of her quirks, and very few felt annoying. I wish I had someone like Be Cool Daphne in my life. Velma is also quite entertaining; she's the Meg equivalent in this show and constantly gets tormented just for existing, such as when everyone piles on her and she has to carry them all. Shaggy and Scooby have changed the least of the group, but I still get a laugh out of them occasionally. I’ve been watching a lot of Scooby-Doo content, and finding a show that's at least 70% enjoyable is practically miraculous. Not every joke works, and I don't think a full episode needs to be 22 minutes; shorter, 11-minute segments would probably be better. Also, when they try to add more story-driven elements in the later episodes feels somewhat insincere because they didn’t lay the groundwork for a compelling narrative (like Mystery Inc. and Rise of the TMNT did), and it seems tacked on. However, there are plenty of genuinely good episodes with mysteries I didn't see coming, likely because I'm losing my ability to guess them. So yeah, it’s a pretty good show and definitely the most unfairly criticized piece of Scooby-Doo media ever made. I can understand why people might dislike it, but if you think this is worse than "Shaggy and Scooby-Doo: Get a Clue!", then we need to talk.
