Synopsis

This program offers an exploration of 20th-century English music, moving beyond conventional pastoral notions. The familiar nostalgia of Vaughan Williams's *Fantasia on ‘Greensleeves'* gives way to the stark power of his Symphony No. 4 and Birtwistle’s unsettlingly complex work, *Exody*. Walton’s celebrated Viola Concerto is featured, performed by Lise Berthaud, a rising star and current BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist.
