Synopsis

Sir Simon Rattle and the Berlin Philharmonic offer a new interpretation of Bach’s St Matthew Passion, conceived by Peter Sellars, for its UK premiere. The work grapples with themes of suffering and torment alongside those of salvation and redemption, woven through some of Bach’s most profoundly moving compositions. Mark Padmore portrays the Evangelist, leading a distinguished cast that includes the acclaimed German baritone Christian Gerhaher.
