Returning to the Proms in 2012, Sir Simon Rattle and the Berlin Philharmonic present a program devoted entirely to Russian composers, drawn from the realm of dance. Rachmaninoff's Symphonic Dances weaves together threads of jazz, plainchant, and waltz into a dazzling orchestral display of virtuosity. Following intermission, the audience is transported to the fantastical world of Russian folklore with Stravinsky’s The Firebird, a ballet score rich in vividness and steeped in folk tradition.
