Simon Russell Beale offers an introduction to Roger Norrington’s unconventional interpretation of Mahler's monumental Symphony No. 9, a quintessential example of late Romantic symphonic writing. This performance, given at the Royal Albert Hall during the 2011 Proms season, marked one of Norrington’s final concerts as principal conductor of the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra, an ensemble he held in deep affection.
