Synopsis

The commemoration of Shostakovich’s centenary proceeds with Valery Gergiev leading the Mariinsky Theatre Chorus and Orchestra in the choral Symphony No. 13, "Babi Yar," featuring bass soloist Sergei Alexashkin. The program also includes a performance of Sibelius's Violin Concerto by Vadim Repin, one of Russia's foremost violinists, and opens with Liadov’s "From the Apocalypse." The evening is introduced by Michael Portillo of the Royal Albert Hall.
