Synopsis

The ninety-second season of the Henry Wood Promenade Concerts begins with Mahler’s Symphony No. 8 in E flat. Mahler himself conducted the triumphant premiere of this expansive Eighth Symphony in Munich in 1910, a mere eight months before his passing. The monumental choral work was, without Mahler's consent, dubbed 'Symphony of a Thousand,' a reference to the sheer number of performers present at its debut.
