A family member suggested this series because their daughter is on the autism spectrum. Our own child, who also experiences challenges with communication and learning, isn’t particularly similar to Sam, but we decided to give it a try. It's generally a very worthwhile program. We managed to get through all three seasons in rapid succession. I will say that Sam addressing the camera at the start of each episode—and occasionally during—did become tiresome for me. However, it does effectively introduce the episode’s topic and can convey information efficiently. Several of the supporting characters are engaging, and the actors deliver solid performances, even if a few verge on being stereotypical rather than simply representing Sam's unique qualities. I would certainly suggest watching this show, and I am eager to see what happens in the next installment. *** After viewing the fourth season now, I’m adding a bit more to my thoughts. This latest season, which might be the final one, largely follows the pattern of previous seasons—which is mostly positive. It still focuses on Sam but also expands upon storylines for other characters, with the exception of Evan, who may have been too inherently good to sustain dramatic plot developments and now has a very small role. The rest of the cast benefits from the strong writing and experiences character development; sometimes in nuanced or intricate ways, like with Elsa, whose growth is evident even though her core personality remains unchanged. It’s easy to find unfair reasons to dislike enjoyable movies and television shows—things like prejudice, sexism, elitism, resistance to change, and so on. But I'm struggling to think of any legitimate reason to dislike Atypical. Criticizing it would likely say more about the critic than about the show itself. It makes me wonder if there’s any possibility for personal growth in someone who feels that way.
