We've been following three seasons, anticipating the arrival of the fourth through PBS Masterpiece’s ‘Walter Presents.’ Presented in French with subtitles, it proves to be a superb program and sidesteps a significant danger that could easily have occurred. The series focuses on a female investigator who possesses an intellect comparable to Sherlock Holmes, but lacks social graces entirely. This stems from her autism, and we rapidly become acquainted with her rapid-fire quirks and methods for navigating a world that feels intensely challenging, where even minor interactions can be difficult or uncomfortable. Given the nature of a character possessing these kinds of differences, it would have been simple to create a predictable cycle, resulting in each episode feeling like just another slight alteration of the last. However, skillful writing and impressive performances prevent this from happening. Raphielle, her crime-solving partner and eventual confidant, offers support and protection as Astrid confronts situations and matures personally. A group of other autistic individuals provides additional stability and assistance to her. Even the police medical examiner, after an initial period of conflict, evolves into something of a devotee, appreciating working with her keen mind and vast knowledge base. Astrid’s progress in managing everyday anxieties is portrayed with sensitivity and feels authentic. Like many of the show's characters, we find ourselves hoping for her advancement and acknowledging her modest gains as intricate murder cases are resolved by this unconventional detective team.
