My wife and I have so many British shows queued up that we can be difficult to please. However, at its beginning, this series definitely managed to keep us engaged. The central group of sisters was compelling, and I found myself invested in their fates—that’s really all you could hope for. I'd place the initial three episodes quite highly. Around episode four and five, though, my engagement began to wane, and I wasn’t entirely sure why while watching. Now it seems like part of the problem was that I couldn’t figure out the motivation behind one sister’s sudden interest in married men. It's not an uncommon occurrence, certainly, but she even acknowledges at a point that she doesn't have affection for them, so what prompted it? Despite this, I didn't feel like abandoning it completely. The final episode was particularly unsatisfying to me. It felt as though the entire atmosphere and viewpoint of the series had changed. I understand that characters passed away and others grew older, which likely contributed to it. But the aging seemed so rapid that it gave the impression more time had elapsed than I expected. The change in focus toward the younger characters also felt sudden. That’s when I realized that my waning interest earlier on was due to me losing track of the chronology—was the country at war with the colonies still, or Ireland? My understanding of the timeline became unclear. Regardless, even with the lackluster ending, I don't have any regrets about watching it. It proved to be a worthwhile historical drama, presented from an unusual viewpoint – not just focusing on the elite, but also showcasing the beautiful people, celebrities, and royalty of that era.
