This revival of a scary television program from the nineties focuses on a group of young people who identify as the Midnight Society. They gather at midnight near a campfire in the woods to share frightening tales. The group experiences an unexpected turn when a newcomer, Racheal, is invited to participate. Her narrative concerning a cursed carnival proves to be real, uniting the Midnight Society against a malevolent leader. I have to say I was let down by this mini-series. When it was announced, my expectation was for something that felt like the original but updated for today’s audience. The initial show had a good formula with unsettling short stories told around a campfire. But this version seemed more focused on one of the kids and lacked the same scary feel. There was only a single story shared by the fire, too. I thought the acting could have been stronger, and the main character didn’t seem as interesting when compared to the others. Honestly, I believe they had the opportunity to create something much better.
