Synopsis

At the Battle of the Marne, the French soldiers, known as poilus, halted the German advance with a desperate stand. On the eastern front, the Germans checked the Russian advance at Tannenberg. In France, following a series of brutal assaults, the combatants entrenched themselves in trenches. Soldiers from French and British colonies arrived to support their colonizers, and the conflict broadened into a global war.
