I typically reserve my lowest ratings or highest praise for reviews... and this one doesn’t even warrant a single star. As a continuation of another series, it’s surprisingly impressive. Aside from saving Frasier, I can't recall any spin-off quite as successful. It wasn't better than MASH, though. However, the quality surpassed Joey. Still, it doesn't reach the level of Buffy, which had a particular structure that I really enjoyed. Angel has elements of a Warner Bros. film noir style and...it’s effective, bordering on feeling like it could have been set in 1940s Los Angeles. The initial episodes are slow; there's an attempt to emulate Buffy while also establishing its own identity, but around the second season, it discovers what it wants to be and proceeds confidently from there.
