Mutual Benefits acquired life insurance policies from individuals living with AIDS, those suffering from chronic illnesses, and elderly citizens, then deceptively marketed these as low-risk investments to clients. As medical progress extended the lives of policyholders, Mutual Benefits continued to solicit funds from investors to cover promised returns. Ultimately, approximately 30,000 people found themselves entangled in a $1.25 billion Ponzi scheme.
