Synopsis

The raid on Columbus, New Mexico, by Pancho Villa represented the bitter end to years of escalating violence along the border. For the United States, it proved to be an intolerable provocation. In 1916, General John Pershing launched an expedition of 150,000 cavalrymen with the explicit aim of capturing Villa, dead or alive. The ensuing conflict brought the two nations perilously close to war.
