Synopsis

On October 4, 1957, Soviet scientists placed Sputnik 1, a sphere of aluminum alloy roughly the size of a beach ball and equipped with a radio transmitter, into orbit. The satellite's appearance sparked a sensation. In the midst of Cold War anxieties, the Soviet Union's achievement signaled a significant technological leap, prompting the United States to feel compelled to enter the Space Race.
