Synopsis

The year was 1959. The Cold War reached its peak, and American schoolchildren routinely practiced duck-and-cover drills. At the invitation of President Eisenhower, Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev, the man many Americans believed possessed the power to unleash a devastating nuclear attack, journeyed to Washington, D.C. For both leaders, the visit presented a chance to curb the escalating tensions of the Cold War and forge a path toward peaceful coexistence.
