Prior to the Second World War, San Francisco’s Chinatown existed as a distinct enclave, largely inaccessible to those outside its walls and governed by unwavering traditions of the homeland. Yet, during the 1930s, the second generation of Chinese Americans challenged these cultural norms, pursuing instead their fervent embrace of American music and dance. They carved out careers as performers likened to "Chinese Fred Astaires" and "Chinese Frank Sinatras," captivating audiences in the city's ren
