Synopsis

Through conversations with Carter family relatives, music journalists, and artists like Gillian Welch, Joan Baez, Marty Stuart, and Rodney Crowell, the story of country music’s pioneering family unfolds. The early years of A.P. Carter, his sister Maybelle, and wife Sara were marked by music's uplifting power. Their 1927 audition for RCA is widely considered the catalyst that launched commercial country music. Yet, the ensuing struggles proved too much for A.P. and Sara’s marriage to endure.
