Synopsis

This work chronicles historian Laurel Thatcher Ulrich’s meticulous endeavor to reconstruct the details of early American life, drawing upon the diaries of Martha Ballard, a midwife and resident of Maine (1735-1812). The narrative features dramatized readings of selected passages from Ballard's journals, alongside the incorporation of contemporary town records to provide further context and verification of her accounts.
