Synopsis

They resolved to make do with less, conserving food and fuel by sharing their meals. Mrs. Hall, however, took this directive with excessive seriousness. James, tending to Hamish, a sick dog needing surgery, and Tristan, charged with the dog’s recovery, suffered a loss. The veterinarians postponed an evening out to treat a stray who had been injured. Tristan was dismayed by Siegfried's attempt to introduce him to Deirdre Headingley, a daughter of one of his companions, not known for her beauty.
