The initial episodes of Acapulco are genuinely impressive, particularly the first season, which stands out with its well-developed characters and clever writing, alongside some truly heartfelt moments. I appreciate the 1980s setting and the Latin feel that occasionally references or directly nods to Spanish-language soap operas. These elements combine to create a distinctive style for Acapulco, making it unlike anything else on television. When the first season concluded with unresolved plot points and a preview of what was to come, I worried that the overarching story might never reach an end and the show would simply continue until its quality and audience numbers declined. While I’m glad seasons 2 and 3 proved to be excellent additions to the series, it quickly became apparent early on in season 4 that my initial concern had been justified. There's a noticeable decline in quality between the first three seasons and the final one; it seemed the showrunners decided not to invest the same level of effort into the last season, simply aiming to wrap up the story they’d established. As a result, the series felt entirely different. Also, given the length of the show and the protagonist's failure to learn from his mistakes, I began to feel increasingly frustrated with Maximo, who initially came across as charming, likable, and somewhat innocent—it's his continued naivety after four seasons of his actions repeatedly causing problems that becomes tiresome, even though individual episodes often feature scenarios set in motion by Maximo’s choices that are well-written and engaging. Season 4 wasn't bad; it had its good points, and I found the finale episode to be at least satisfying, if not a masterful conclusion (which I don't think would have been possible given what preceded it). The finale did manage to address some of the issues that plagued season 4 as a whole. I’d honestly rate seasons 1-3 each a perfect 10/10, but season 4 brings the score down to around an 8, resulting in an overall series rating of 9 for me. Despite everything, Acapulco was worth watching, even though getting through the unevenness of season 4 to reach the final episode can be a bit tedious. The first three seasons are more than excellent enough to make it worthwhile to watch from beginning to end. I enjoy the characters and actors—Eugenio Derbez is a legend—and the personal and social themes, including depictions of queerness, elevate it. There's also a wonderful sense of humor and fun energy that evokes .....the feeling of being at an Acapulco resort in the 1980s! Acapulco is a good show; I’d give it a strong A-.
