"Gomorrah: The Origins" didn't impress me as much as the initial "Gomorrah" series did; it’s a real letdown considering how good the original is—easily a perfect score in the crime/mafia category. This prequel, taking place in 1970s Italy, suffers from performances and scenes that feel exaggerated and theatrical. It seems to be shouting, "This is supposed to be the seventies!" but it just doesn't quite land. The more it attempts to capture a specific era, the less believable it feels; what we’re presented with is clearly an artificial recreation of events that has very little connection to actual Italy or that time period. The final product ends up feeling almost comical, edging toward satire. It’s not at all like the original series' realistic and grounded approach. Ultimately, this show is brought down by its clumsy execution and historical inaccuracies right from the start. If you haven't seen "Gomorrah," I would recommend starting with that one instead.
