I watched Maul: Shadow Lord, featuring Sam Witwer—who you might know from Battlestar Galactica—as Maul, Vanessa Marshall (Star Wars Rebels) as Rook Kast, A.J. LoCascio (X-Men '97) as Marrok, Chris Diamantopoulos (Silicon Valley) as Vario, Denis Haysbert (Justice League) as Master Eiko-Dio Daki, Gideon Adlon (The Craft: Legacy) as Devon Ishara, Richard Ayoade (The Bad Guys) as Two Boots, Steven Blum (The Mandalorian and Grogu, Marvel Rivals) as Icarus, Sam Cortlett (Vikings Valhalla) as Reb, Stephen Stanton (Star Wars: The Clone Wars) as Marg Krim, Charlie Bushnell (Percy Jackson and the Olympians) as Rylee Lawson, John Carroll Lynch (The Highwaymen) as Nico Deemis, Wagner Moura (Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, The Secret Agent) as Captain Brander Lawson, and Scott Whyte (Missing Link) as Dryden Vos. I really enjoyed it; it’s a slow-paced Tech Noir/Neo-Noir that draws inspiration from anime like Ghost in the Shell (1995), Akira, and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. It has a very cyberpunk feel to it. The dynamic between Maul and Devon is fantastic, and Witwer and Adlon both deliver impressive performances. Moura also continues his strong work—remember him as Captain Lawson from Puss in Boots: The Last Wish—playing essentially a Deckard/K-type character; he's even better than Syril Karn from Andor. It was great to see Haysbert return as Daki, with many believing he’s connected to the High Republic Era, and serving as an excellent Jedi mentor similar to Old Ben Kenobi and Yoda from the original trilogy. The series doesn't shy away from mature themes, and it’s a welcome step into adult animation within Star Wars. The action is very deliberate, almost John Wick-like even with lightsabers. I think Star Wars has been doing okay since Andor. Maul is one of the most iconic villains—right up there with Vader. Showrun by Dave Filoni (Star Wars: Ahsoka) and Matt Michnovetz (Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order), produced by Athena Yvette-Portillo (Star Wars: Tales of the Empire), and based on Star Wars created by George Lucas, with a score by Kevin Kiner (Peacemaker) and The Kiners (Tales of the Underworld), Maul: Shadow Lord doesn’t hold back, drawing inspiration from anime greats in this slow burn Tech-Noir/Neo-Noir thriller. I'd give it an 8.5 out of 10.
