The California sunshine couldn't quite penetrate the gloom Retta encountered during her house hunt. Three properties, promising idyllic living, instead presented unsettling visions. One resembled an overgrown jungle, another was a converted barn with a distinctly rustic, almost oppressive atmosphere, and the final estate evoked the feeling of navigating a vessel rather than residing on solid ground.
