The 2001-2002 television season marked Saturday Night Live’s twenty-seventh year on NBC, running from September 29, 2001, to May 18, 2002, and delivering a total of 20 episodes. The season began under an unprecedented cloud; just eighteen days prior, the devastating attacks of September 11th had shaken New York City. In a powerful show of resilience, SNL proceeded with its premiere, opening with a moving cold open featuring then-Mayor Rudy Giuliani alongside New York’s firefighters and police officers, affirming the city's determination to carry on – and that Saturday Night Live would do the same. The season wasn’t without further anxieties. Three weeks in, an anthrax scare at GE Building forced a full evacuation of cast, crew, and even guest host Drew Barrymore. Despite these challenges, the show persevered. The season also saw a surprising twist: after being released from the cast prior to its start, Chris Parnell was welcomed back mid-season during Jonny Moseley’s episode. This marked only the second time in SNL history that a fired performer had been rehired, echoing Jim Belushi's return way back in 1983.
