The 1994-95 television season marked Saturday Night Live’s twentieth year on NBC, running from September 1994 to May 1995. Unfortunately, this season proved a challenging one for the show, drawing sharp criticism and prompting serious concerns about its future – echoing similar struggles faced in earlier years. Many sketches felt underdeveloped, with an uncomfortable number revolving around the ongoing O.J. Simpson trial dominating the cultural conversation. NBC executives grew increasingly worried about SNL’s trajectory, seriously considering canceling the show altogether. As Lorne Michaels later revealed, this season brought him closer than ever to being fired. Ultimately, the situation led to a significant shakeup behind and in front of the camera – the most substantial intervention from NBC since 1980-81 and the largest cast overhaul since 1985-86. Adding a somber note, the season was marked by the passing of two beloved alumni, Danitra Vance and Michael O’Donoghue. A touching tribute to O'Donoghue appeared during the Sarah Jessica Parker/R.E.M. episode, with Bill Murray making a special appearance to introduce a clip from his classic "Mr. Mike" segment.
