Saturday Night Live — Season 1
The 1975–76 television season marked the debut of Saturday Night Live, NBC’s groundbreaking weekly sketch comedy and variety show. Premiering on October 11, 1975, the first season delivered a vibrant mix of performances across 24 episodes, concluding on July 31, 1976. The show's origins were surprisingly rooted in late-night television logistics. When Johnny Carson, then the undisputed king of late night, requested that NBC cease airing reruns of "Best of Carson" to free up two weeknights, the network swiftly complied – fearing Carson might otherwise seek a move to rival networks like ABC or CBS. To capitalize on this newly available slot, NBC tasked Dick Ebersol, a rising star mentored by legendary sports producer Roone Arledge, with developing a fresh 90-minute late-night program. Ebersol’s crucial first step was bringing aboard Lorne Michaels, a young Canadian producer who would become the show's driving creative force.
