The show's quality has fluctuated over the years, but looking at it from a distance reveals that it has maintained a fairly even keel throughout its history. Not every season featured top-tier writers or talent; some actors have achieved far greater success than others—and still, it consistently attracts viewers. I personally enjoyed the mid-2000s era with Bill Hader and Andy Samberg, though most people tend to favor whichever seasons they watched during their teenage years. The consistent format and production team tie together all the different casts, creating a recognizable feel across every season. There's always a host monologue, a musical guest, Weekend Update, and crucially, it’s always broadcast live! The process involves pitch meetings with the host, staying up late on Tuesdays to write, rehearse, and run through costumes. Whether it was 1975 or 2023, everyone involved goes through similar experiences (though the presence of cocaine has likely changed over time). The claim that SNL hasn't been funny since "the last ten years" is unnecessary. Every season receives criticism for lacking humor, yet each one also delivers hilarious sketches and introduces new comedic talent. The 1970s brought Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi; the 80s gave us Julia Louis Dreyfus and Conan O'Brien; the 90s featured Will Ferrell and Eddie Murphy; the 2000s had Tina Fey and Amy Poehler; the 2010s showcased Kate McKinnon and Vanessa Bayer, and now in the 2020s we have Bowen Yang and Marcello Hernandez. The show keeps inspiring and amusing aspiring artists with its innovative approach to sketch comedy. It’s an American tradition that I will always cherish.
