The Orlando Magic teams of the mid-1990s, spearheaded by Shaquille O’Neal and Penny Hardaway, rose to prominence not only within the NBA but also in the broader popular culture. Their promising dynasty, however, faltered prematurely; Shaq's departure via free agency to the Los Angeles Lakers, compounded by subsequent injury troubles for Penny, prevented the Magic from ever fully realizing their potential.[62]
