In Kyoto, Japan's ancient capital, lies Gion, the nation's most renowned traditional entertainment district. Each year, young women recently graduated from junior high arrive here, aspiring to become maiko, or apprentice geisha. At fifteen, they leave their families and reside together with established maiko and other trainees.
