Synopsis

In June of 1980, Aerolinee Itavia Flight 870, a McDonnell Douglas DC-9-15, departed Guglielmo Marconi Airport in Bologna, Italy, en route to Palermo, Sicily. It was in its final descent when the aircraft crashed into the Tyrrhenian Sea near the island of Ustica. All 77 passengers and 4 crew members perished in the disaster, the precise cause of which remains a subject of ongoing debate.
