I’m truly enjoying this series; it's fantastic. For ten weeks, starting my Sundays with “School Trip” was a joy, and nothing could take away that feeling. It has been such a wonderful show! I’ve always liked Japanese BL series because they generally have good stories and don’t tend to feel padded out like some Thai shows do. Plus, the actors are usually experienced, and the production values are consistently high. What sets “School Trip” apart is that it features characters who are all genuinely likable – you'd want to be friends with every one of them. A less skilled writing team might have made these characters seem simple or lacking depth, but that’s not what happens here. Hioki (played by Fujimoto Kodai) is a quiet student who finds himself included in the “Four Heavenly Kings’” group for a school trip. Watarai (Kan Hideyoshi), the leader of the "Kings," has been drawn to Hioki for some time, and inviting him along is his way of getting closer. These two boys – classic examples of opposites attracting – find themselves falling for each other. The premise might seem familiar, but it’s not a typical BL story because the characters develop beyond predictable tropes. Watarai seems like your standard “seme,” the taller and more assertive partner, but he's actually insecure and even shy when trying to win Hioki over. Hioki, meanwhile, is smaller and often awkward, appearing fragile, but as he mentions, "he plays sports." Although he’s initially reserved around the “Kings,” his middle-school friends really admire him, and it turns out that he's the more emotionally resilient of the two main characters. “School Trip” offers pure, lighthearted fun without being shallow. It has brought a smile to my face not just during those 25 minutes on Sunday mornings, but throughout the entire day.
