I wish I’d exercised more caution before giving this one a chance, especially considering the BBC's involvement; Russell Tovey was enough to lure me in, but I instantly wished I hadn't bothered. It carries with it the predictable diversity initiatives that have become standard from British productions, and also a strange sense of unwarranted pride, as if the UK still holds some kind of significant global position. The combination of hypocritical identity politics, a dose of British self-importance, and an incredibly grating musical score quickly grated on me. The fact that Tovey’s character seems constantly to be diminished—apparently there are no positive male figures here—doesn't help matters. And the plot draws inspiration from 1950s/60s science fiction about aquatic monsters, so it isn’t even particularly inventive. Now they aren’t called “sea devils” anymore but instead, ridiculously, "Homo Aqua." Seriously? I had to bite my tongue to keep from laughing out loud. There are a few positives—the acting is reasonably good, the cinematography is appealing, and the creature designs are at least somewhat engaging. Ultimately, receiving a lecture from the BBC feels ridiculous. The UK government that funds them has, metaphorically speaking, been aligned with countries like Israel, so they hardly seem to be a moral authority, would you agree? Aside from that, the story is passable, but it’s overwhelmed by preachy and sanctimonious messaging, which leaves very little to appreciate. I won't be watching this again. Occasionally, deviating from the "whatever perspective we want, as long as it's ours" DEI agenda can draw unwanted attention online (yes, people really do troll film/TV reviews, imagine that!). Perhaps in its own peculiar way, that’s an unintended endorsement, if not a compliment? Regardless, I trust my judgment and strive to be fair, even if I'm not always completely neutral.
